An international grocery and general merchandising retail chain. Tesco is the third largest global retailer based on revenue but second largest based on profit. Originally specialising in food and drink, it has diversified into clothing, consumer electronics, financial services, telecoms, health and car insurance.

A British retailer of DIY and home improvement tools and supplies. It was founded in 1969 and is the largest DIY retailer in Europe and China, and the third largest in the world, behind The Home Depot and Lowe’s. It is a subsidiary of Kingfisher plc.

The world’s largest online seller of branded intimate apparel, offering the A to Z of branded underwear, swimwear, exercisewear, nightwear and hosiery for men and women.

The UK’s largest online-only fashion store offers its own label as well as branded goods. Sales have risen ten-fold in four years. Almost all clothing on the site can be previewed on models in individual catwalk videos.

A  discount hardware chain with more than 324 stores. Wilkinson is now rolling out grocery products in every store and has re-launched www.wilkinsonplus.com its online store.

STEAD & SIMPSON                                                Revenue: £138 million (2006)    Employees: 3,484 (2006)

Founded by Edward Simpson in 1834, it was once the third largest specialist footwear retailer in the UK operating nationally through over 400 stores. The company was subsequently sold in early 2008, safeguarding almost 3,000 jobs and ensuring the continuation of a venerable high street brand.

One of the largest consumer electronics retailers in Europe. DSGi operates  Dixons, Currys, Currys.digital, PC World and Electro World stores. Specialises in  consumer electronics products, audio-video equipment, PCs, domestic appliances, photographic equipment, communication products and after sales.

Owned by Borders, with a turnover of $3.8 billion and 14,000 employees – Paperchase is the retail brand leader in design led and innovative stationery in the UK. It has 100 outlets in the UK, and over 300 concessions in Borders, House of Fraser and Selfridges stores.

Carpetright Plc is one of the largest British retailers for floor coverings.  It is a constituent of the FTSE 250. As of May 2008, the company has 675 stores. It has stores in Belgium, the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland.

The UK’s largest direct and online supplier of trade tools, accessories and hardware products. Founded in 1979, the company was acquired in 1999 by the Kingfisher group, which also owns B&Q.

KINGFISHER                                                              Revenue: £9.4 billion (2008)     Employees: 71,000 (2008)

An international retailer which has owned a wide variety of retail chains in its history but is now focused on the DIY business. Kingfisher currently operates 780 stores in 9 European and Asian countries. Its main retail brands are B&Q, Castorama, Brico Depot, Trade Depot and Screwfix.

Created by the British government in 1921 to run recreational establishments for the British Armed Forces, and to sell goods to servicemen and their families. NAAFi Runs clubs, bars, shops, supermarkets, launderettes, restaurants, cafes  on most British military bases and also canteens on board Royal Navy ships.

WHITE STUFF                                                                      Revenue: £44.7m (2008)    Employees: 614 (2008)

White Stuff was founded in 1985 to sell Boys from the White Stuff sweatshirts in bars around the French Alpine ski resort town of Val d’Isere. By 2008, it had grown to own 60 shops, over 100 wholesale accounts and operate a sales website and catalogue business.

Health Services

THE ROYAL SURREY COUNTY HOSPITAL              Income: £180 million (2008)    Employees: 2,800 (2008)

A General Hospital with 528 beds, 14 operating theatres and 2,800 staff. The hospital sees 250,000 outpatients a year, 55,500 patients are admitted for treatment and over 59,000 patients attend A+E. In 2008, the Trust was awarded ‘excellent’ in the Healthcare Commission’s Annual Health Check, for the quality of its services.

NHS Norfolk was set up on 1 October 2006 and covers most of the county.

Assa Abloy Group is a Swedish company. The group is the world’s leading manufacturer and supplier of locks. Assa Abloy now owns Yale lock, Sargent and the high-security lock firms of Medeco in the US, Mul-T-Lock in Israel, Fichet in France, and VingCard Elsafe in Norway.

Founded in 1889, McCormick is the global leader in the manufacture, marketing and distribution of spices, herbs, seasonings, specialty foods and flavors, to the food industry.
